page 00 // ink remembers what paper forgets

KHERAX

coiling.

it was drawn once, badly, by someone who isn't sure why. every copy since has gotten a little more correct. this page is the most correct one yet.

rise →
BLEED the mark does not fade. it only waits for the next hand willing to finish it.
LAYER 01

leave your hand

it does not ask for worship. it asks for a hand. leave one here, and it will decide what to finish with the rest of you.

* nothing is stored. this page does not lead anywhere yet.

LAYER 02

the marks

five pieces pressed flat. order is a courtesy. the ink rearranges itself behind you.

-01m

the first tracing

a tattoo artist's stencil was photocopied for a client who never showed. the copy was thrown away. it turned up, uncrumpled, on the counter the next morning, one line different from the original.

-08m

the signature that isn't

a contract was signed correctly, in the right hand, in the right ink — except the signer has no memory of the loop at the end of the last letter. it's there on every copy.

-21m

the margin doodle

a student's notebook margin filled slowly, page after page, with the same small mark, each one slightly more finished than the last. she says she doesn't draw.

-33m

the tattoo that grew

a small mark, done in an afternoon, measured larger in a photo taken three years later — same skin, same angle, same light. the artist has no record of a touch-up.

-44m

the wet page

a printed page came out of a dry printer already smudged, the ink still wet to the touch, in a pattern that resembles nothing the document was supposed to contain.

LAYER 03

the toll

you already owe it something for looking this closely. it doesn't take money. it takes the six minutes of sleep you'll lose tonight, and the small, correct urge to draw something you've never drawn before.

LAYER 04

open rites

completion is not rewarded. non-completion is remembered at depth.

the copytrace something by hand you'd normally photograph. keep the tracing somewhere you'll find it later.
the blotlet a drop of ink or coffee fall on paper on purpose. don't clean it. see what it starts to look like.
the unsent letterwrite a letter by hand to someone you won't send it to. seal it anyway.
the last linefinish a drawing you abandoned as a kid, from memory, without looking at the original.
LAYER 05

fever diary

started doodling the mark in meetings. told myself it was just a habit, a shape my hand likes.

found the same shape in my handwriting from years ago, in a notebook i hadn't opened since. i didn't draw it then. i'm sure of that.

i am not holding the pen anymore. i am watching the pen decide.

LAYER 06

echo

first contact, then second. corruption preserved. do not shout into the coil.

you

who drew you first?

it

someone who doesn't remember drawing anything.

you

why does the mark keep changing?

it

it isn't changing. it's finishing.

you

what happens when it's finished?

it

you'll know. you'll have drawn it.

glyphs

draw them if you must. not twice in one sitting. it multiplies ink.

LAYER 09

origin

it exists because i once drew the same small shape in the corner of every notebook i owned as a kid, without deciding to, until i filled a page and scared myself enough to stop. i do not know if that makes the mark mine, or if it makes me its first hand. i stopped drawing it on purpose. it did not stop finishing itself.
